My Year-Round Secret to a Home That Always Smells Amazing
There's something magical about walking into a home that smells incredible. Not perfume-y or overwhelming — just warm, natural, and welcoming. Like someone you love lives there.
My secret? A simmer pot. And this one, from Williams-Sonoma, is my absolute favorite.
It takes five minutes to put together, uses ingredients you probably already have, and fills your entire home with the most beautiful scent. Rosemary, lemon, vanilla, black pepper — it's cozy and fresh all at once, and it works every single time.
The best part? You can make this any time of year. I do.
Williams-Sonoma Simmer Pot
Ingredients:
3 sprigs of rosemary
1 lemon, cut into slices
1 tsp. Nielsen-Massey vanilla extract
1 tsp. black peppercorns
8 cups (64 fl. oz.) water
How To Do It:
In a Dutch oven, combine the rosemary, lemon, vanilla extract, and black peppercorns. Cover with water and bring to a simmer over low heat. Continue to simmer, uncovered, for up to 2 hours.
That's it. Seriously.
This Month's Real Estate Tip: First Impressions Start Before They Walk Through the Door
If you're thinking about selling your home, here's something I always tell my clients: buyers decide how they feel about a home within seconds of walking in.
The way a home smells is part of that first impression — and it matters more than most people realize. You want buyers to feel relaxed, welcome, and at ease the moment they step inside. A simmer pot does exactly that, naturally and beautifully, without anything synthetic or overpowering.
Pop one on the stovetop about an hour before a showing. Keep it subtle. Let it do its work.
It's one of the simplest, most effective things you can do — and it costs almost nothing.
Of course, a great scent is just one small piece of preparing your home for sale. If you're thinking about listing and want to talk through what buyers in our market are looking for right now, I'd love to connect.
